One of the most powerful passages in the book of Matthew comes in chapter 16. It’s the passage where Jesus asks the disciples who the people said he was. Their opinions varied from John the Baptist to Elijah to even Jeremiah. But the opinions of the world weren’t the ones Jesus was really after. He wanted their opinion, which is why he reworded the question the second time to ask who they thought he was.

As followers of Jesus today we have so many varying opinions of church, worship, faith and even Jesus. Some believe he’s the only way while others think he’s just one way among many. In a teaching series, John MacArthur uses this section of the bible to discuss the marks of the true Christian church.

In this week’s message we’ll unpack the text of Matthew 16. We discuss the reasons why people had so many varied opinions of who Jesus was. Then we’ll move on to talk about our own confession.

How well formed is your confession? Do you know you have a confession? What is Jesus to you? Who is Jesus to you? If someone asked you what you believed and why you believed it, could you answer them?

Check out this week’s midweek message and feel free to leave your thoughts as discussion starters.
