I don’t like to stop. I often am afraid that while I’m asleep I’ll miss something important. This is a large reason why I stay up late and rise early. But there’s another kind of sleep that has crept in and started to affect us all. It’s the sleep of complacency.

We get so wrapped up in the way things are that we often lose sight of the way they should be. We see the world spinning out of control and we think this is just normal. We are watching many religious liberties being taken from us and all we seem to be doing is chalking it up as increased trouble before Jesus returns.

But we’re not the only ones who were asleep at the wheel of life. Back in Bethlehem, just before Jesus was born, the nation fell asleep. The people who God loved as his own lost sight of all of God’s promises. They heard of a coming King but never really thought it would happen in this way. They walked with Jesus but there was no way this one could be him.

History has a tendency to repeat itself over and over again. If we, the church, don’t wake up we’re going to miss out on a wonderful opportunity to walk with Jesus here on this earth. We get so focused on the work Jesus did for our salvation and our eternity that we seem to forget how much he cares for our lives today.

Big things are happening while we are caught in the slumber of contentment and tradition. It’s time for us to wake up and live the calling that’s been placed on our lives. May you walk through your day today awake and alert to all that God is doing for you and around you.
