I’ve told the story before about walking across campus in college when a professor asked me how I was. You know the kind of asking when you really don’t expect an answer? Well that’s exactly what this was. He asked and kept going without even listening to my reply. Knowing this I replied how terrible my day was and that I was considering dropping out of school. He kept his pace, didn’t miss a beat and said Good for you. Keep it up!

Now most of the time when we’re asked this question, we answer with the same reply Oh I’m good! How are you? But are we really? All too often we wear a mask of perfection when we’re merely hanging by a thread. We act as if everything is going great when really we’re unraveling faster than we can catch the falling pieces. Wouldn’t it be nice to find a place where we can just be ourselves? At the gym we have to look stronger than we are. In school we don’t want to stand out because we’re not smart enough so we try to perfect the art of making things up. We feel we have to suck our stomach in when we’re around the skinny people or stand a little taller around the giants around us. But inside we’re falling apart and unraveling like a ball of yarn being batted around by an ornery cat.

The good news is there is a place where you can be you. There’s someone who loves you for who you are. This week’s Music Monday is a song about that very moment when you realize you’re hanging by a thread. It’s the realization that you don’t have to hide what’s real anymore. It’s the truth that when we’re falling apart we’re put in a prime position for God to restitch our hearts to the way he created them.

Let God pull the dangling thread in your life and then knit you back together in his image once more.
