On the twelfth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
twelve drummers drumming.

As we wrap up our Christmas journey, we sit at the feet of those who have gone before us. One of the tenants of the Christian faith is called the Apostles’ Creed. It is a statement of faith that sums up the teachings of Jesus and His closest followers, the ones we call disciples or apostles. On this the twelfth day of Christmas we celebrate what they have passed down to us.

The drummers in any band provide the rhythm for the rest of the band to follow. When the band can’t see the director they can at least follow the beat of the drums. Even in a parade when a band of musicians or military procession comes along they have a cadence or a rhythm to follow. This is the function of the drummers drumming.

On this the final day of Christmas, and yes you can put those trees away now, we celebrate the drum beat of the faithful in whose steps we follow. In our church buildings and in our times of worship, we often recite these words of the Apostles’ Creed. These words are powerful and summarize all of the teachings of the Bible in 12 succinct points. Some will argue about the number of points but for our purposes in this song, we’ll call it twelve. The point is the teaching of God in Scripture is the drumbeat of our lives. When our lives are found in rhythm with God, we find ourselves in a good place.

As Christmas has now come to a close, the drumbeat of these twelve faithful drummers keeps going. Even when the tree is packed away and the lights are all back in their boxes, we hear the drum. My prayer as we close this series is that you hear the drum of those who have gone before you. Find yourself in a place where that drumbeat is consistent and true. If you find yourself out of step just look to those who walk by the same beat of the same drum and soon you’ll be back on track.

May you have a blessed 2018 as you walk in step with the one provides you with His rhythm for live.
