Betraying Eyes

Throughout the season of Lent, those 40 days leading up to Easter, we gather on Wednesday nights for an extra time of worship and contemplation. Generally we take a theme of sorts and weave these weeks together. At the church I serve, we are journeying through the moments of Jesus’ life and looking at significant events through different eyes. This week we see things through eyes of betrayal.

It’s not a fun idea, I know! No one wants to be known for betraying anyone, much less betraying God. This week we take a look at a man named Judas. He is best known as the one who handed Jesus over to be arrested and killed. Judas traded Jesus for a friendly kiss on the cheek. How awful is that!

What would cause a man who followed Jesus so closely for a little over three years to turn on this man so quickly and for seemingly so little pay? What would make him do this? And how would Jesus react when it happened?

These are the questions we address in our Eyes on Jesus series focusing on Betraying Eyes. Take a few minutes and listen as we unpack the night when Jesus was betrayed and see just how Jesus will respond to this horrific moment.

Holy Water

Never been to Jerusalem. Never been to the Jordan River. Never walked through the holy waters of the Bible. But after listening to this song, perhaps I can say that I have experienced something far more powerful than any of these locations could have given me. In church world we call this sweet holy water stuff – forgiveness.

I’ve never walked through a super hot desert without water but I have worked outside on hot summer days when the heat just zaps all of the energy out of me. When I come back inside and drink that tall glass of ice-cold water it’s like new life is breathed back into me.

This week’s Music Monday is a song called Holy Water. The beat is catchy and the words are powerful. Take a few minutes and listen to the words. Listen closely because when we really focus on what’s being said in this song we’ll realize that our lives are a lot like that desert I mentioned earlier. We go through life dry and parched. We try to fill ourselves with drink after drink but all it does is leaves us even more thirsty. It’s kind of like the Bible story of the woman at the well. She kept having to go back and get more water for herself. But Jesus offers her water that will make her never thirst again. This is the water of forgiveness.

When we realize the dry and parched nature of our souls when we keep going back to the well of sin, then receiving this fresh and life-giving water of forgiveness is like the sweetest water we could imagine. Listen. Think. Then receive this water for yourself as you turn and focus on what He is doing in your life.

Strength To Let Go

We generally fit into one of two categories. We’re either the can’t do anything right kind of people who are always down on ourselves and blame ourselves for the slightest problems that we had nothing to do with! Or we are prideful and arrogant and claim success and deny our own failures. Rarely is there a middle ground! This week’s Music Monday is about making the switch from both of these to the right way of living. It’s about finding the strength to let go of ourselves that we can find who we truly are in Christ.

Warning: Contains Honesty

It’s a shame but it’s the truth. Sometimes we have to warn people when we’re being honest. We live in a culture that’s become so sensitive to challenges of opinion that when a disagreement occurs we automatically jump to the defensive. But this isn’t healthy! We need disagreement to grow. If we can’t disagree with someone and talk through it, we are much to be pitied! To that end, if you’re not interested in truth, honesty and perhaps being offended then just stop reading right here. But if you think you can handle the truth, then carry on.

Grip of Grace

The Grip of Grace is written by Max Lucado. And if you’re looking for an author and a style of writing that really puts you in the middle of the page, it’s Lucado! His writing is personal and has a way of letting you experience what he’s seeing. This particular work by Lucado is equally powerful! Lucado takes time in his work to contrast the ideal of grace with the things we try to measure up to grace.

The Purpose of The Law

I’m not a huge rule breaker but sometimes laws are just a pain! Some days the speed limit is more of a hindrance than a help. Those double yellow lines in the middle of the road are often positioned at just the wrong places! Some laws however are there for good reasons and serve very helpful purposes! But what is the real reason for the law? No not the speed limits or the driving laws. Not the ones that say it’s illegal to steal from the local convenience store. But what’s the purpose of the laws we find in the bible? Why did God give them to us anyway?

Start Over

Growing up I used to spend time outside with friends. We would play games and imagine what life would be like if we were all soldiers or marines. We would form sports teams in the neighborhood playing games like football and kickball and baseball. I remember when I was fairly young we used to ask for a do over when things didn’t go quite the way we wanted them to go. We’d miss the ball at kickball – Do Over! We miss the tackle in football or miss the pass – Do Over!

Am I Good Enough?

Practice makes perfect. Try harder. Dig a little deeper. Push just a little more. Come on you can do it! We can hear the words of well-meaning people shouting at us from the sidelines of life. These are mottos for many of us as we navigate the difficult days we experience. Are we good enough to make it? Do I have what it takes to achieve the successes I desire in life? What makes me good enough?  Continue reading

Should’ve Been Me

Some days in life are those should have, would have, could have kind of days. You know the days when you look back and realize you should have done something different. You could have done it completely in a different way. And I you had a chance you’d go back and do that part of your life over again you most certainly would not do it the same way again!  Continue reading

Ready To Be Myself

If we’re being honest, we’ve all tried to change the way we look or act to fit in and be like a certain group. Sometimes it may feel like you have a dozen personalities to fit each group but none of them really feel like you. So often we become someone we are not meant to be just to be loved by the people of the world. Maybe no one sees through the face you put on. Occasionally a really good friend will be able to notice you aren’t yourself. However, God notices every time. Continue reading
