Yesterday was a pretty big day in the church. If you’re a Jesus follower, then hopefully you heard mention of something called Pentecost yesterday. The long and short of Pentecost is that it was the time when God gave us his Holy Spirit. The disciples were in a house when a breeze blew through the home and a fire appeared on their heads. They then began to tell everyone what they believed about Jesus in many different languages. It’s a pretty cool account! Check it out in Acts.
But for now, think about this for just a moment. The Holy Spirit is probably the most under-utilize gift we’ve ever received. When the disciples received this Holy Spirit gift, they were on fire! Not just the little pieces of fire that appeared over their heads but actually in their hearts they were so passionate that they were on fire! They couldn’t stop talking about Jesus. They couldn’t stop telling others what they had seen and heard. They were shouting from mountain tops. They were inviting others to come along for the journey of faith that they had been on for several years. Something changed in them when they received the Spirit.
Now what if I told you that the same Spirit they received was available to you and me today? What if we believed that the power of God was at our disposal today as well? The bible tells us that the best place to get access to the full-blown presence of God is through his word. As we read the bible, worship together, grow in bible study, and serve one another we’ll notice that this flame is kindled in us. A fire that can’t be put out with a little water. It’s a fire that burns on the inside. It’s like a holy heart burn of sorts.
Jesus invites us to be as passionate about following him and sharing his love as we are about our new car. He wants us to share his love with others the way we share our status updates on Facebook. He was us to be so consumed by him and his love for us that we’re not limited to 140 characters like in a text message or a tweet on Twitter. Dive into his word and let his Spirit set you on fire today!
