I remember as a child running up to my grandpa, sitting on his lap and asking him to scratch my back. I used to love having my back scratched! There was something so soothing about it. It was relaxing to say the least. Anymore however a back scratch is more functional. It’s because there’s an itch that I just can’t reach. But there’s a problem.
It’s often hard to show someone where the itch is located! Now when I ask my wife to scratch my back it’s because there’s an itch somewhere. We’ll then go through a series of little to the left, little lower kind of directions before she finds that one spot where the itch is located. Because what good is it to scratch what doesn’t itch?
I’ve been pondering this thought today as a pastor. As a church, are we scratching the itch or just randomly doing things that answer questions people aren’t even asking? I mean how often does the church take into account the way a person hears the message? We all come to worship with a different set baggage. So the question we need to look at is where is the itch? Another way to ask the question is:
What do you need on Sunday to better prepare you for Monday?
Think about that question for a minute. What does your Monday look like? What would make your Monday a little easier? What can the church do to help you get through the Wednesday 1:30pm slump? How can we better prepare you to cling to Jesus throughout the week? The idea behind the question is where is your itch?
Many questions on blog posts like this are somewhat rhetorical but not this one. I’m really interested to hear what you have to say. I’d love to comb through your feedback. Leave a comment. I’ll read them all. If you don’t want it public just say so in the comment. They all come to my inbox, so I’ll just keep the private ones there.
So what do you need on Sunday to better prepare you for Monday? Where is your itch? What questions are you wrestling with for which we can help you find the answers?
