The story in the Bible of Jesus walking on water is definitely one of those fun stories. I mean what kid doesn’t want to have some sort of super power like flying or even walking on water? This week we took time to dissect this account and show there several lessons embedded in this familiar narrative.
We talk about making sacrifices for other people. We give up a little something in an effort to make someone else’s life a little better but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that’s not a sacrifice at all. We are willing to inconvenience ourselves but rarely are we willing or able to sacrifice something of great value.
Some days you turn on your streaming music device and a song just kind of hits you. Maybe it’s the beat. Maybe it’s the lyrics. Maybe it’s the artist. This morning I turned on my Apple Music and this song came on. My bluetooth speaker was loud because I was moving around church putting things away and making my coffee. It made me stop in my tracks.
Thank you Lord. How often do we stop to just thank him? How often too we see the small things as blessings? It’s way too easy to take these things for granted and just ignore them as if we deserve them or have somehow earned them.
This morning’s Music Monday will be shorter because I want you to have time to hit pause on the busyness of life and just be thankful.
Last night was the first time our new worship service met. It was a service allowing an additional group of people to attend worship who feel more comfortable in a more intimate setting. The goal is to podcast the messages but we had some technology issues so here’s a quick synopsis.
Seems like we’ve gotten things a bit out of whack here lately. So much is happening so fast that we have a tendency to fire before we aim! I obviously don’t mean really shoot anything, but we pull the trigger on an activity or a plan before we really give it much thought.
This week at church we looked at one of the most adult rated stories in the entire bible. If this were made into a movie it would not be on television and it would likely not make it past your parental control settings. It was the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Perhaps you know the story? Maybe not? Let me give you the PG-13 version.
There’s a lot of talk in the world right now. Everyone has something to say. Bloggers blog. Writers write. Speakers speak. We update our Facebook with all of our thoughts and feelings. We have no problem telling peopel what we’re for and what we’re against. But there’s something we might have forgotten and that’s the theme of this week’s MusicMonday.
The past few weeks I’ve been considering leadership especially as it fits our current world stage. For those who’ve been in leadership positions where their job dictates they make decisions and lead people, these last couple of months have been undoubtedly trying. Let me start by saying thank you for your work. No matter your field, leading through crisis is not easy. But I believe crisis sorts leaders from managers.
This week I had the chance to attend a conference. I use the word attend loosely because as you know well, no one really attends much of anything these days, at least not like we used to. Our attendance is relegated to at best seeing faces on our computer or phone screens. But nonetheless, I attended this conference in this very manner. So over the next couple of weeks I’m going to share a little of what I gained from that conference infused with my own thoughts and practices.
I don’t know about you but it seems the more I know the more I realize I really don’t know all that much after all! I learn one thing and it has a tendency to undo something else I learned at another point in my life. Especially in today’s world when I learn about the things going on in our world and then the message changes, it’s just a swirling mess of noise anymore. So where do we start? How do we know what’s real and what’s not?
