I recently stumbled accidentally across a song that has pretty much been on repeat for the last several days. This song isn’t fast. It’s not super loud or even upbeat but wow is it ever powerful! Hillsong has a way of crafting songs that hit the message of the bible perfectly! If you’ve ever wanted to know the story of Jesus but don’t know where to start in the bible, then this song might be a great place to begin.
We start with the devastation of darkness. It was a time without hope. A time without any light. All we had was a promise. But as the song builds we come face to face with the light that breaks into the darkness. But that’s not all. The light didn’t just break into the darkness, it obliterated it! By dying on the cross, Jesus took the sins of the world on his shoulders. He bore our sins on the cross. Now our debt is paid!
Praise the Father,
Praise the Son,
Praise the Spirit three in one,
God of Glory.
Majesty.
Praise forever to the King of kings.
Now admittedly my favorite part of the song comes near the end. When the resurrection is proclaimed. The music builds. The Son has been raised. The church is born. The Spirit lights the flame. And the gospel truth is all that’s left. Just the church and the message of the truth of Scripture.
I dream of a day when the chruch gets back to that time. A time when all that matters is the message of the Bible. I lay awake at night wondering what happened to the church. Where did we go wrong? When did we lose sight of our first love? At what point did the gospel truth no longer become the main thing? When did we replace it with tradition and the confessions of men? When did we let our words become more important than Jesus’ words?
Church there are a lot of kings in this world. Kings come in all shapes and sizes. They look like politicians, musicians, movie stars, worship leaders, even pastors. They can look like our buildings, rituals, traditions and even our confessional documents. If any of these things becomes the main thing, then we’re screwed! We’ve totally missed the boat of what Jesus taught. All of these are good as long as they stay under the lens of the Bible. These may be kings but there’s a King above all these. His name is Jesus. And this is his story…
