We live in a dog eat dog kind of world. Every moment is about trying to get ahead in life. We need to be better than everyone else in class or in the office. We need to be the best on the team and the number one in the league. We need to even be better than we were yesterday for crying out loud! Nothing is ever good enough. But ever happened to humility? This week we talked about humbling ourselves versus being humbled by someone else.

No one wants to be put down or pushed aside or forgotten or neglected. Jesus tells us in the gospels that we should never think too highly of ourselves. We shouldn’t choose the place of greatest priority for ourselves because then we run the risk of being knocked down. Jesus is protecting us from being humbled by telling us to humble ourselves. In our message this week, we met John the Baptist who willingly lowers himself in order for others to see Jesus more.

John’s followers realized that everyone was leaving John and following Jesus. They asked John what they should do! They were confused to say the least! Then John says one of the most humble and powerful things in scripture He must increase, but I must decrease.

Essentially John is telling his disciples that his own time is ended and it’s now time to follow Jesus. Go after Jesus. I’ve served my purpose. My only goal in life was to connect you with Jesus, and I’ve accomplished that goal. Go. Follow. Be filled with Jesus.
