My family loves to go to Disney world for vacation. I’ve been going there since I was a small child. While the Disney corporation is constantly trying to be on the cutting edge of technology and products, there is something about their Orlando-based park that is a staple to say the least. Every time we go to the Magic Kingdom theme park we absolutely have to ride It’s a Small World. That ride has been there for as long as I’ve been going and it hasn’t changed in all those years. But why? Why is it a staple, and why hasn’t it changed?
The ride is a staple because of its very simple message, no matter where you’re from we’re all here together in this small world. You see Disney is a small world of its own that is for the young and old from every continent in our very large world. When you’re at a Walt Disney theme park, you almost forget where you really are because everything works together and supports everything else. It’s an amazingly well-designed little community.
The Small World ride tries to bring all of the continents of the globe into one short ride, and it does a pretty good job. But when you really look at it, the world is huge! If you were to travel to all of the continents represented in that ride, it would take days if not weeks and you’d be exhausted! The world is extremely not so small or is it?
The bible tells us that the world is so small in comparison to the power of God that he has measured the waters in the palm of his hand. Think about that for a minute. God has measured all of the waters on the earth in the cup of his hand. Do you know how long that would take you to do? Science estimates that there are more than 325 trillion gallons of water on the earth. The prophet Isaiah then goes on to say that he weighed the mountains on a scale. God is bigger than the world. He’s bigger than the distance from the east to the west. He is able to hold the whole world in his hand, and yet he cares so intimately for each individual part of the world that he couldn’t stay away.
The same God who measured the waters and the dust of the earth is the same God who sent His Son to walk with us and live with us in this world. Jesus was the physical presence of the Son of God on the earth. Now you and I carry that presence with us daily. We are the temple of God wherever we walk. It’s the same God who now lives in us who makes this large earth into a small world.
Enjoy the expanse of the earth and the intimacy of the small world that is in the palm of God’s hand.
