Wow! That’s a pretty powerful statement. I am a friend of God? But how can that be? How can I be His friend? Can an imperfect person like me be a friend to a God who I believe to be worthy of my worship? Is that even possible? This song is such a powerful statement for my life. Let’s think about it for a minute…

One of the lines in this song by Israel Houghton that really speaks to this friendship is the line I am a friend of God he calls me friend. It’s not my good that makes me God’s friend. It’s not my abilities or talents that makes me like-able to the God of the universe. It’s him. It’s his disposition to like the unlikable. It’s the character of God to reach into the brokenness of our lives and like us through the pain and hurt. Being a friend of God is all about God’s love for me. When he called me loved and beloved, he called me his friend.

But living as a friend of God should mean something looks different. John 10:10 reminds us that God desires for us to receive a full and complete life. He wants to give us everything we need and much of what we want in life. He wants us to know what real living is about! That’s what it means to have God as our friend. It means that he’s willing to walk beside us in the bad times. It means he wants us to share in the good and the bad moments in our lives. Do you have a full life? Would you say that your life is being lived to the fullest? If not, maybe it’s time to talk to your friend. Maybe it’s time to share your joys and sadness with the one who called you his friend.

You are a friend of God because he called you his friend!
