Maybe it’s a business trip. Maybe it’s a move to a new place. Maybe it’s just a temporary distance. This song was written by one of the members of For King and Country as they were on tour. He was praying that God would hold his wife while he was away. I’m not sure who you’re away from right now or who you’re praying this song over but take comfort and know that God is doing just that holding her tonight.

As meaningful and wonderful as that concept is we can almost hear this as part of Jesus’ own prayer before he went to the cross. In what’s known as Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer (see John 17), he prays for his church. He prays that God would keep them true and right and bold in their faith. In a sense, he’s praying that God would hold her (the church) tonight. And that’s just what God does. He never leaves us, never turns his back on us. Sure bad things are going to happen and some will question his presence but it doesn’t affect the reality of the matter. God is always here whether we see him or not.

So whether this song is about Jesus praying for his church or you praying for that special someone in your life, the outcome is exactly the same. Jesus was willing to die for his church, and perhaps if this prayer is that meaningful to you then you just might be willing to die for that person too? Know beyond a shadow of a doubt that wherever she is and whatever she is doing, God is watching over her and holding her tonight. She’ll never be alone. She’ll never be in a place where he is not. Nothing can separate us from this love. Nothing!
