This week’s MusicMonday post is one of my personal favorites – a song called Free to Worship. I first heard it at a conference that talked about the sacramental presence of Jesus in the world today in his people. The message of this song was so very powerful for me. Check it out below.

There are a lot of key thoughts in this song but the one that really is a game changer for all followers of Christ is the chorus:

The curtain was torn through, We stand before you, And mercy was all you speak

Give that line a quick second to sink in. The curtain was torn through… In the Old Testament temple there was a curtain that designated the holiest of places. It was the place where God promised to dwell in all of his perfection. Imagine standing before a perfect God, who lived in perfect, holy, intense light. Now imagine what it would be like to have him see your secrets. It would be embarrassing wouldn’t it? No one wants someone better than them to see their flaws. But in this case the story doesn’t end the way it should.

Common sense in our world would tell us that a perfect God seeing an imperfect creature would result in punishment. Actually that’s what the bible tells us should happen. There should be punishment, but not just punishment – death was supposed to be the answer. But not in Jesus!

When the curtain was torn through there was nothing but mercy. Nothing but love and forgiveness. A good definition of mercy is not getting the bad I do deserve. Wow! That’s powerful! Me and all of my imperfect junk stand fully exposed before God and all he does is love me and forgive me. That makes me Free to Worship him wherever I go and whatever I do.
