This is Easter week which means there’s a new life in the air. The cool crisp air feels great as it inflates our lungs. The sun rises and shines a little brighter these days. It’s staying lighter longer which is great! This is the time of year when creation starts to wake up from its winter slumber.
The grass around our homes is starting to green. The perennial flowers are starting to peek through the ground. Fresh coatings of mulch are going down. The flowering trees are starting to have leaves poke through the soft spring limbs.
But spring is about more than just leaves, flowers and green grass. It’s about everything coming alive! And when I say everything, I mean everything! Spring is the time of Easter. It’s the time when we celebrate new life being breathed into all of creation not just the plants. We come alive at Easter as well.
As a follower of Jesus every Sunday should be a mini-Easter but all too often we let the humdrum boredom of life set into our worship. We just go through the motions until Easter and then we wake back up a bit. The songs liven up. The pastor gets a little more excited. We put on our fancy clothing and shadow the entryways of our church home. Something is different at Easter time. Something changes in the world and in me at Easter time.
It’s as if everything comes alive! And it does. Our lives are filled with people who try to shut us down. Jobs are lost. Loved ones die. Children disobey. We are beat down just about everything we look up. But Easter is a time when we remember that the cross was about God making everything come alive! Good Friday and Easter Sunday are reminders that all of the darkness of the world couldn’t win. When it seemed like all was lost and that evil had finally triumphed, when darkness covered the face of the earth, that’s when it happened. And not a minute before it.
God waited until everyone said it was impossible, and then he breathed life back into His creation. Like it or not, believe it or not, this world is God’s creation. Our believing it doesn’t make it any more or less true. It’s his and he laid out a perfect plan to redeem and restore it. He watched as his creation died as Adam and Eve ate that forbidden fruit. He watches as we lose faith and quit trusting. He watches and waits.
Then he acts! At just the right time. When the world said it wasn’t possible and that I was too far gone, God reached into my life and made everything come alive! And he’s done it for you too! All you have to do is believe, trust, have faith that in Jesus your life is new and you are truly alive. Everything comes alive in Jesus!
