Ever notice that this world is pretty divided? I know that’s not news to anyone. Just turn on the television or your social media feed and you’ll be inundated with all of the _____lives matter campaigns running round. We divide on just about everything! We disagree about matters of gender, church affiliation, sports teams, politics and even how we do what we do. But there’s something far more important than any of these things!

Even as followers of Jesus we tend to argue and bicker about stuff that was never really all that important to Jesus! We build our fortresses on traditions and things made of human hands. We put far too much weight in the how-to’s of life and far too little time is spent focusing on the who, what, when and why.

It seems like as a people it takes a disaster like a tornado, wildfire or a series of hurricanes to bring us to our knees and remind us that the things that divide us really aren’t the point. It’s been so amazing to watch the coverage in the wake of these hurricanes. True the disaster is something that I’ll never be able to fathom and I’m not pretending to at all. But the way people are rallying together, traveling hundreds of miles, giving of their time and supplies to help perfect strangers of varying backgrounds…it’s amazing! It’s like these storms have brought our manmade cities to their knees in a moment of weakness.

This week’s Music Monday song is about being a City On Our Knees  not out of weakness but out of humility and worship. When we can put aside our differences and focus on the two things the Bible spends a lot of time on in the New Testament, we’ll be much better off. Jesus gives us two things, one if you really think about it. He tells us to love God with the core of our being and to love our neighbors as ourselves. I think the reason he tells us to love well is that when we’re focused on loving and serving there’s little time left for bickering, complaining and backbiting.

This week I pray that we, wherever we are, become a city on our knees. Not broken down and battered. But humbled that God would invite us in to be a part of his plan. Let’s love well this week!
