The saying is older than me and I have no clue where it comes from, but I’m certain we’ve all heard it. Less is more! The idea is simple. Do less in a more intentional way and you’ll end up being more effective in the long run! So the question we need to address as individuals and organizations is What are we doing that we don’t need to be doing anymore?

Last week in the post titled What’s the point? I referenced the idea of the tyranny of the urgent. And as promised here’s a quick rundown of what that looks like and how to better manage the important and urgent portions of life. Before we begin, I must confess. There was a time in my life when I was something called an adrenaline junky. Adrenaline Junkies are dangerous people. We’re dangerous because there’s not a lot we can’t do but we’ll run most people over in an effort to get them done. Additionally, they’re dangerous because they get all fired up and go like gangbusters when they’re pushed to the limit of time and ability.
Continue readingThere are some days when you just get to the end of the day and you wonder what was the point of this day anyway? I mean what’s the point of a day spent getting nothing on your calendar knocked off? Or what about the task list that is ever growing and seemingly never getting something taken off the list? Are days when you don’t get anything done really a wasted day?
Continue readingI love chips and salsa! I will frequently grab a bowl full of salsa and a bag of tortilla chips and sit down for a quick snack. But there’s one problem. Chips and salsa have a lot of salt in them! The more you eat the more thirsty you get. The more chips I eat the more water I need. It’s like a never ending cycle! Salt naturally makes you thirst and desire liquid refreshment!
Continue readingIt’s a shame but it’s the truth. Sometimes we have to warn people when we’re being honest. We live in a culture that’s become so sensitive to challenges of opinion that when a disagreement occurs we automatically jump to the defensive. But this isn’t healthy! We need disagreement to grow. If we can’t disagree with someone and talk through it, we are much to be pitied! To that end, if you’re not interested in truth, honesty and perhaps being offended then just stop reading right here. But if you think you can handle the truth, then carry on.
Continue readingEarlier this year, I was asked to step into a role within our larger church body to serve as a Regional Facilitator. It’s a bit of a fancy term for a guy who walks alongside congregations in a specific (yet very broad) geographic area to assist with a variety of ministry and mission objectives. How’s that for vague?! Some of these tasks will include vision planning, financial and stewardship emphases, and church revitalization/planting and so much more!
Continue readingWhile doing my daily check on facebook, I came across a cry for help. My sister-in-law lives in the Dayton area, an area that was recently wrecked by tornadoes. Thankfully she and her family were safe and suffered no loss, but many in the communities surrounding her were devastated. The church she attends became a holding tank and volunteer station for the greater Beavercreek area and they needed help providing hope to the community.
Continue readingOne of the staples growing up was to watch the movie The Wizard of Oz. As you may know, the movie is the story of a girl who’s transported by a tornado to a far away fantasy land that’s in Dorothy’s words not Kansas anymore. As the story unfolds, we journey with Dorothy along the clearly marked, yellow brick road to find the city of Oz. It’s home to a great and powerful wizard. Along the way, Dorothy picks up a few friends who each have their struggles, but Dorothy convinces them that help can be found in the great Wizard of Oz. Continue reading
Imagine you’re at a fork in the road. You can follow the path on the right that seems less traveled. It appears that few have gone down this road. For the most part the path is clearly marked. The path is barely worn but recognizable. The terrain is pretty hilly and has a bunch of rocks. The problem however is the path leads through a wooded area that might not be all that safe. It looks dark. No lights anywhere. The branches are broken in the trees and there appear to be wild animals in the woods. The other path however is smooth and clear. It’s actually paved nicely. The pavement has obviously been traveled a lot. There’s no overgrowth around the edges. It is very clean. And even better the entire path is well lit. Which would you choose? Continue reading
The title of this might be a bit misleading so let me dispel any misunderstandings right away. This is not a post about the reality television show. It’s not about music or vocalists trying to make it big by impressing some panel of judges. Nothing wrong with the show necessarily just not the point of this post. So if it’s not about the show then what, you may be asking. It’s about the voice that speaks the loudest to you. Do you know what voice you listen to the most? Continue reading
