This is one of my favorite songs of the Christmas season. It’s not an easy one to sing, especially for someone who isn’t all that great at singing. But it’s an uplifting song. Listen to the words. If you have a hard time keeping up, check out the lyrics here.
Hark how the bells call us to something special. Those sweet silver bells tell us that something big is happening right here, right now. The bells call out. They ring. They cling. There was a television series on in the 80s titled Saved By The Bell. The bell was the class bell and it typically saved the trouble-prone Zach from getting caught.
These bells of Christmas do a little saving of their own. They remind us that Christmas is here. They remind us that Christmas is more than a day to remember. They remind us that something special happened that day. They remind us that Christmas day is the start of a season. They remind us that we have been saved too. The bells call us past the manger to the child all grown up. They call us to see the baby all grown up and hanging on a cross. The bells point us forward to the angels singing their songs of praise as Jesus was brought to life on Easter morning. The bells drive us to a time yet to come…a time when all of these things will become even more real. The bells ring us into a future time when Jesus not only is risen but also reigning on his throne.
Listen to the bells. Hear them ringing. They’re calling out to you. May you be saved by the bell this Christmas.
