Recently someone suggested that I watch this movie, An Interview With God. And I just had the chance to watch it, so here’s a quick synopsis of the film.

The movie essentially is about a man struggling to understand who God is and how God operates and why God does what God does. Now let’s admit right away that trying to understand the mind of God is a terribly futile endeavor because even the Bible says, no man can know the mind of God! See 1 Corinthians 2:11. But it’s a movie so play along a little here. Seriously we’ve all asked the questions like why do bad things happen to good people and why me? These questions drive to the heart of trying to determine the mind of God.

Paul, the main character, and his wife are struggling in their marriage which appears to be the backstory throughout most of the movie. He’s a journalist who has just returned from a war with stories to tell and even a platform to tell them. The entire movie revolves around three, not so chance, encounters between Paul and God. It’s called an interview but let’s be honest, who in the world would be able to interview God without having the tables turned a bit. The interview doesn’t exactly go the way Paul has planned but ends up going the way it needs to go for Paul to understand a little more about who God is and why things happen.

It’s not an action packed thriller by any means but it’s a good, wholesome and thought provoking movie. An Interview With God will make you think about what you know and how you live. It’s a movie not a theological commentary, so there will likely be things contained that don’t exactly line up with your personal confession of faith. That’s ok. It’s not the Bible! Watch it with open eyes but with a knowledge of what you believe. Very clearly stated through the movie is the clear confession that there is one way to God and that’s through Jesus. It’s also stated that even though there are many apparent “gods” in the world, there is really only one true God.

Let the movie help you wrestle with the ideas of faith and works and how they work together. As you see Paul struggle with his own faith and insecurities in his abilities, maybe you’ll find your own struggles revealed and a light shined them. All in all it was a good movie that I’d recommend for a family of just about any stage in life to watch, although it would certainly be more applicable to an older audience. Here’s a trailer for the movie. I hope you enjoy!
