The Bible is full of pretty uplifting and cool stories. There are things about good morals and great ethical behavior. There are stories about how we should love one another and how God cares for us in our times of weakness. But if you dig just a little below the surface of the fun stories, you’ll find the ones that really don’t sound all that right.

This week in worship we found one of those stories that just makes you think. It’s the story of Jacob, the one who would later be called Israel and be the founder of the people known as the Israelites. Well, this guy is also the same one who betrayed his brother for a blessing by lying to his father. Lots of not so good moral stuff in that! But it gets better.

As you’ll find out in this week’s message, Jacob has a thing for a woman named Rachel. She’s pretty and he really wants to marry her. But her dad would rather Jacob marry Rachel’s older sister, Leah – who is admittedly less attractive than her little sister.

Jacob doesn’t want this but good old dad does a little switch on Jacob and send Leah to Jacob in the middle of the night. He wakes up next to a woman and is happy until he realizes she’s not the one he wanted.

Throughout the story we find that Jacob is having problems because he’s struggling with his relationship with God. As we unpack this story in our message for the week, we discover that when we focus on our relationship with God our relationships with others get better.
